Internships at Eliot Community Human Services

Eliot Community Human Services has been providing placement sites for undergraduate and graduate level interns for more than 20 years. Many of these relationships were developed on an informal basis through program staff through our network and local colleges and universities.

In 2005 Eliot began their Graduate Student Intern Program by formalizing and coordinating the procedures for accepting and training graduate student interns. The program has grown to hosting twenty-six students this fall semester in 2009 from the Schools of Social Work at Simmons, Boston College and Salem State, Mass. General Hospital’s Institute of Health Professionals (language and speech therapy) and the graduate schools in Mental Health Counseling (including two Music Therapy Interns) at Lesley University and Cambridge College.

The interns are working with people with chronic mental health issues, juvenile offenders (and their families), youth under 12 who cannot live with their families due to abuse or neglect, and their families. Interns also work people with developmental disabilities and children with, or at risk for, developmental delays.

Students are provided agency seminars each year to add to their professional development. An example of this years seminar include the following topics:

  • Speaking about Wellness
  • Person Centered Treatment
  • DCF and DYS Youth: Who are They?
  • Substance Abuse: Disorders, Challenges and Useful Skills
  • Trauma
  • Engagement in the Therapeutic Process
  • Being a Therapist
  • Social Action
