When Jeffery first connected with Eliot’s Independent Support Program in 2022, he was facing overwhelming uncertainty. At the time, he was living in a temporary arrangement in his childhood hometown of Woburn, and feeling increasingly disconnected from the world around him. Spending the majority of his life with an acquired brain injury (ABI), his trust in others had worn thin.

From the first meeting with the Eliot team—his SHIP coordinator, support staff, and program supervisors—Jeffery made it clear that he didn’t expect much. Years of isolation and letdowns had built walls that were high and deeply entrenched. But Eliot staff didn’t shy away. They showed up, listened, and kept coming back.

Even when conversations were tough, even when Jeffery met them with suspicion or frustration, the team responded with steady presence and quiet perseverance. Slowly, moments of trust began to emerge. What began as brief visits marked by guarded interactions turned into something more: a genuine connection built on respect, patience, and the willingness to meet someone exactly where they are.

As Jeffery faced a loss of housing, the team worked beside him—not just to solve the crisis at hand, but to help him move toward something more stable and lasting. Together, they navigated a difficult transition, eventually relocating Jeffery to his own apartment in Lowell. It was the first time he had lived outside of Woburn, and a pivotal step in his journey toward independence.

Today, Jeffery remains in his home, pays his rent, and continues to engage with the Eliot staff who have become a consistent, caring presence in his life. While he still faces challenges, he now sees the Eliot team as part of his extended support network—people who didn’t give up on him, even when things were hard.

In his words, “When no one wanted me, Independent Support from Eliot took me in.”

Stories like Jeffery’s don’t follow a straight line. They’re built over time, through small wins, difficult days, and the kind of support that doesn’t give up. At Eliot, we know this kind of presence makes all the difference.
