The Heart of Social Work: Honoring Women in the Field

March is a time of recognition—both for the history-making women who have shaped our world and for the dedicated social workers who make a difference every day. National Social Work Month and Women’s History Month share a common theme: the power of compassion, advocacy, and resilience. And on National Social Worker’s Day, we highlight the professionals who embody these values, working tirelessly to uplift individuals and communities.

At Eliot Community Human Services, we’re proud to have incredible social workers leading the way, like Abi, a Program Support Specialist working with justice-involved teenage girls. Abi’s role is a blend of structure and support—case management, career preparation, group facilitation, and relationship-building.

Social work, as Abi puts it, is anything but predictable.

“Expect the unexpected!” she says, describing the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of the job.

Whether she’s coordinating career prep workshops, helping a young person navigate personal challenges, or stepping into an unexpected situation, no two days are the same. And that’s what makes the work so impactful.

The heart of the job, though, is in the relationships built. Abi remembers a young woman who arrived months into her pregnancy, distant and frustrated by the circumstances that brought her to justice system involvement. Over time, through patience and persistence, Abi and her team gained her trust. The day after she was discharged, they found a letter she had left behind, thanking them for their support. Earlier this month, Abi and her colleagues had the chance to attend her baby shower—an unexpected but meaningful reminder of the lasting impact of their work.

Social work is often misunderstood but Abi is quick to debunk the myths.

“Social workers are everywhere—in hospitals, schools, mental health services, and community programs. Most of us are just trying to help clients figure out what they need and how to get it.”

For Abi, her journey into the field wasn’t always clear. She originally pursued biology, thinking she’d become a doctor. But after encouragement from her mother and mentors, she realized her passions aligned with social work. Now, as she pursues her MSW while working full-time, she credits Eliot’s leadership for supporting her growth.

“Everyone I’ve met at Eliot has been invested in helping me meet my goals—whether it’s my supervisor, division directors, or even leadership supporting my education.”

As we celebrate National Social Worker’s Month and Women’s History Month, we recognize professionals like Abi—women who show up, do the hard work, and change lives. Their dedication, resilience, and ability to connect with others are the foundation of meaningful change in our communities.

At Eliot, we are grateful for the social workers who make an impact every day, and we remain committed to supporting them as they continue to shape a brighter future.
