Celebrating Recovery Month

Celebrating Recovery Month: A Conversation with Eliot’s Director of Lived Experience Services

At Eliot, the transformative power of lived experience is a cornerstone of our programming. Our Director of Lived Experience Services, Danny Ginivan, embodies this philosophy, bringing a unique perspective to the leadership team that is both professionally and personally grounded. We sat down with him to discuss his role, the significance of Recovery Month, and how the broader community can support recovery efforts.

Building Bridges Through Lived Experience

In his newly created role as Director of Lived Experience Services, he oversees a dedicated team of Recovery Coaches, Peer Specialists, and Family Partners. His mission is clear: to ensure that Eliot’s peer-based services are delivered effectively and that the staff providing these crucial supports receive the guidance and training they need to excel.

“Having worked as both a coach and peer specialist myself, I understand the challenges and rewards of this work. My primary focus is to create programs and systems that empower our team and best support our clients,” he explains. “It’s about building bridges between those who’ve been there and those who are just beginning their recovery journey.”

Recovery Month: A Time to Unite and Celebrate

For many, Recovery Month is a time to reflect on personal achievements and the collective progress of the recovery community. For our Director of Lived Experience Services, this month holds special meaning both professionally and personally.

“Before joining Eliot nine years ago, I didn’t fully grasp the scope of Recovery Month. Attending the statewide advocacy day hosted by MOAR was eye-opening. Seeing a huge gathering of individuals supporting various recovery programs reminded me of 12-step conferences, but on a much larger scale,” he shares.

This year, Eliot hosted its own Recovery Month event on September 20th, a celebration of every individual’s recovery journey—whether it’s been 12 days or 12 years. “We wanted to acknowledge and celebrate every achievement, big or small. Each step in recovery is significant and deserves recognition.”

Spreading the Message of Hope

When asked what message he wants to share with the community during Recovery Month, he emphasizes the importance of hope and inclusivity.

“Recovery is possible, and Eliot is here to help, no matter your path. Whether you’re pursuing an abstinence-based recovery or exploring other options, we support all pathways to recovery. It’s not about fitting into one model; it’s about finding what works for you and having the support to achieve it.”

How the Community Can Support Recovery

Supporting recovery is a community effort, and there are many ways to get involved. One of the simplest yet most impactful actions is to support programs and projects that offer resources and services to those in recovery.

“We need to shift the narrative around substance use and recovery,” he says. “Stigmatizing individuals who are still using substances doesn’t help. Instead, we should support treatment programs that acknowledge that recovery looks different for everyone and that one size doesn’t fit all.”

As we near the conclusion of Recovery Month celebrations, let’s come together to support each other’s journeys and advocate for inclusive, accessible recovery services. At Eliot, we’re proud to stand alongside our community, fostering hope and resilience for all.
